Three years ago Wrestling was just a dream that
three fathers (Jeff Larson, Rob Fortin, and Doug Braun) had hoped that
one day their Sons would take part in at the High School level.
However, due to Northwestern giving up on their program and Warner never
having it at all, this was merely just a dream. That is until fate
had somehow brought these three together and the idea of AAU Club
Wrestling had begun. September of 2007 flyers went out to both the
Warner and Northwestern Communities in hopes that it would spark some
parents interests. Northwestern had a rich tradition at one time
so we felt that it would be possible to get some students from that
school, however Warner with never having a
wrestling program we weren't sure if they even new what wrestling was,
so we really were unsure what to expect, beside this we didn't know if
it was even do able since we had nothing for equipment such as a mat or
a place to even hold the practices, this was a big gamble and we had
hoped it would pay off. The meeting was set and held at the new
restaurant in Warner (Big D's) and numbers were fairly good but not
exactly what we
had hoped for, I believe we were somewhere in the
area of ten possible Wrestler's. Being the die hard fathers we
continue to push on as it was only October and we had until January
until Wrestling began. The families that were there were very
supportive and the hard work of fund raising began. Little by
little we chipped away raising money with a gun raffle and approaching
local businesses for help. We found a home for practice (Warner
Community Center), I opened a Club Checking
Account,
and Rob found a cool Wrestling site that made singlets. Now we
needed to hold another meeting so we could get sizes of the kids and
order the singlets. This meeting was held at the community center
and was a screaming success as we were now up to twenty wrestlers and
all had signed up that night. Votes were also held that night to
select the colors and a name for the club. This went back and
forth a little as we debated over the details until the kids attending
the meeting chimed in and suggested that since we had the Wild Cats from
Northwestern and the Monarchs from Warner, we should just be called "the
Wild Monarchs", conversation had stopped at that point and the name was
settled, after all it was for the kids why shouldn't they name it.
Isn't it funny how the kids don't complicate things like us adults.
At this point things were moving fast, however still no mats.
Finally as luck would have it a mat had been located in Parkston for
sale and it was in the nick of time as it was middle of December and
Wrestling would start as I said in January. One small problem
though, the mat was $1500 and we had only $600 in the bank account.
Now normally this would only work in the government, but with a little
charm and a whole lot of support from the Warner school we were able to
borrow money from the coaching fund and buy the mat. We were in
business! The Practice would prove that we had our work really cut
out for us as almost all of our wrestlers were very new to the
sport. We took some early beatings and still managed to have a lot
of fun doing it. At the end of the year our little team had caught
the eyes of the coaches who had known that we were new to the program
and every tournament a comment had been made of how we were progressing.
We were on the right track! We decided as a team that we would
hold our own tournament as this is were the big money was made. 86
Wrestlers attended and every thing went smooth as can be, we were
very thankful for the wrestling community who all pitched in and gave a
hand to move this club along. Especially to the NSU
Wrestlers who
gave their time so that these kids who came not only had a good time
wrestling, but as so received a lot of great teaching that they
provided. It was great to see the College kids being such a
positive role model to these kids. By the time the tounament had
ended we were all exhausted, but raised enough money to pay everything
off and be debt free. Yeah! As districts rolled around we were not
sure of how this was going to work out, we knew that our little
wrestlers had worked hard all year and had so much wanted them to leave
the year on a positive note so we took 14 Wrestlers to Milbank and
stayed the night at the super 8 motel and showed them what a family of
wrestlers were all about. It was a good time for all. The
next day would be a long one, however at the end of the day we qualified
13 wrestlers for the Region Tournament in Brookings. This was
truly a dream! While Brookings came two week later and from there
we would only qualify four Wrestlers to State, our kids wrestled their hearts out
and we definitely left an impression to everyone we met in the
tournament. Only two Wrestlers decided to go down to the State
Tournament (Joey Nash and
Andrew Mitchell) as it was down in Rapid City, a long drive for most
people. However, this was a year that would be remembered as one
heck of a way to start a Wrestling Tradition! We Thank all of you
who gave a lot of time and effort to make these dreams happen.
Everything fell right in place or should I say the right parents fell in
place to make all this happen.
